Client: University of Sheffield
In July 2015, DLP Planning submitted an application for planning permission and Listed Building Consent on behalf of the University of Sheffield for the demolition of workshops and labs, alterations, improvements and repairs to the Sir Frederick Mappin Building and the Central Wing, and the erection of a glazed atrium to provide academic and administrative space alongside the creation of a new entrance to St. George’s Campus from Portobello Street.
The Mappin Building and associated railings are Grade II Listed and were added to the heritage list in 1973. The site is situated within the St. George’s Quarter of the City Centre in Sheffield and adjacent to the Grade II Listed St. George’s Church. St. George’s Campus is located at the heart of the University of Sheffield’s city campus.
Full planning permission and Listed Building Consent was granted at Planning Committee with unanimous support from Council Members.
The proposal satisfied the need to upgrade the teaching facilities and meet the requirements for the University’s growing Engineering Faculty and continued growth of student recruitment and research income. The overall public benefits of the scheme and the improvements to the function of the buildings as well as their character and appearance were supported by local and national planning policy.
