FHPH1 (Faculty of Health Phase 1)
Sheffield
Client: The University of Sheffield
DLP Planning were appointed as planning consultants to secure planning permission, conservation area consent, and vary an existing permission for the Faculty of Health Phase 1 (FHP Ph1) Project.
The new development builds on the success of the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), which opened in 2008 and is internationally recognised for research into neurodegenerative diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. FHP Ph1 will provide a second, expanded facility to meet SITraN’s growing research and teaching needs.
The new building offers approximately 2,653m² of space, including laboratories, classrooms, workspaces, stores, and social learning areas. A new footpath through the site also forms part of the project. It will be used by staff, students, and visiting researchers, enhancing SITraN’s visibility and reputation. Students from across the School of Medicine and Population Health will benefit from upgraded teaching and learning facilities.
Located in the Hanover Conservation Area, design sensitivity was crucial. Bond Bryan Architects designed a modern development that complements the surrounding built environment, incorporating GRC stone, glazing, and copper cladding.
Planning permission was granted in August 2024 (ref: 24/01340/FUL), and development is now underway. The project supports SITraN’s global leadership in translational neuroscience by:
• Expanding research space across the Division of Neuroscience and Neuroscience Flagship.
• Creating state-of-the-art core facilities for broader use.
• Increasing small-group teaching environments to support innovative learning and improve the student experience.
We are delighted to have been involved in this project and to see it proceed.
